Incident Overview
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has openly congratulated US President Donald Trump following significant developments in Venezuela involving President Nicolás Maduro. In a message posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated, “Congratulations, President Trump! This is a victory for the world and sends a clear message to evil dictators everywhere.”
The congratulatory note from Elon Musk follows the announcement that the United States initiated a swift overnight military operation in Venezuela on January 3, resulting in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores.
Background of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro’s Capture
On January 3, 2026, US military forces conducted a rapid operation in Caracas, apprehending Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. This action by the US came after months of intensified pressure, including a $50 million US reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest, due to his alleged involvement in international drug trafficking. Maduro was transported out of Venezuela by US military aircraft, marking a significant turning point in the political crisis facing the country.
Following Maduro’s arrest and removal from Venezuela, US President Donald Trump declared that the US would “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could be ensured.
When questioned about who in Venezuela would be part of the transitional group, Trump mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been in communication with Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. Trump informed reporters that Rodriguez had expressed willingness to cooperate with Washington and was prepared to do “whatever” was necessary for the US.
Elon Musk Offers Broader Support
Elon Musk’s congratulatory message extended beyond words. The SpaceX CEO announced that his satellite internet company Starlink would provide free broadband service in Venezuela until February 2, ensuring continued connectivity for citizens during this transitional period. The company posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Starlink is providing free broadband service to the people of Venezuela through February 3, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.” Quoting Starlink’s post, Elon Musk added, “In support of the people of Venezuela.”
