Incident Overview
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has openly congratulated US President Donald Trump following recent developments in Venezuela involving President Nicolás Maduro. In a message shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Musk wrote, “Congratulations, President Trump! This is a win for the world and a clear message to evil dictators everywhere.”
The congratulatory note from Elon Musk followed the announcement that the United States undertook a swift overnight military operation against Venezuela on January 3, detaining President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores.
Background of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro’s capture
On January 3, 2026, US forces executed a rapid military mission in Caracas, apprehending Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores. This action by the US came after months of intensified pressure, including a US reward of $50 million for information leading to Maduro’s arrest, accusing him of alleged involvement in international drug trafficking. Maduro was flown out of Venezuela by US military aircraft, marking a significant turning point in the country’s political turmoil.
Following the arrest and expulsion of Maduro from the country, US President Donald Trump stated that the US would “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could be established.
When queried about who in Venezuela would be part of this group, Trump mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been in contact with Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. Trump informed reporters that Rodriguez was willing to cooperate with Washington and had demonstrated readiness to do “whatever” the US required.
Elon Musk offers broader support
The congratulatory message from Elon Musk was not confined merely to words. The SpaceX CEO announced that his satellite internet company Starlink would offer complimentary broadband service in Venezuela until February 2, ensuring connectivity for its citizens during this transitional period. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the company stated: “Starlink is providing free broadband service to the people of Venezuela through February 3, ensuring continued connectivity.” Quoting Starlink’s post, Elon Musk added, “In support of the people of Venezuela.”
This gesture by Musk reflects a commitment to help maintain crucial communication infrastructure during a time of political uncertainty in Venezuela, assisting civilians with essential internet access.
